De Land
Situated on 34ha of land in the outskirts of Potchefstroom, this development aims to create a sustainable village in which older people can retire in an environment where their lifestyle is not compromised nor are they isolated from the community. Rather, they will be part of a group that buys into and shares in the lifestyle values promoted by the town.
The town consists of 3 main neighbourhoods. The first is more rural consisting of free-standing houses on a 0m building line which clearly defines the nature of the street. Then there is the medium-density area catering to the younger market and university students, and lastly, there is the retail node with mixed-use activities that define the entrance into the village. The design of the town is based on new urbanism and accommodates environmentally sustainable systems such as continuous green open spaces, community gardens, and rainwater harvesting.
